A laid-back bossa nova record that captures the feeling of the beach and the sun was what Berlin master record producer Stephan Flock had in mind as his latest theme. Which artist's works are better suited for this than those of the Brazilian "The Girl From Ipanema" originator Antonio Carlos Jobim?
Eight beautiful tracks were selected from its rich repertoire, with some unforgettable melodies, colorful harmonies and rarely played 3/4 bossa to be found. The pieces were harmonically modernized in a careful way and arranged for the special live direct cut, the "direct-to-disc" process. According to the motto "What is played can be heard - what is heard was played" there are no overdubs and cuts.
The recording begins with the poetic soprano saxophone piece "Fotografia". With "Eu te amo" follows one of the rare 3/4 Bossa pieces, whose swaying melody is a real earworm. "O morro nao tem vez" is surely better known to many under the title "Favela": a cheerful samba that features drummer "Zipper" Schmigelok on the brooms and contains that certain something with Helge Adam's light reharmonization. The soulful "How Insensitive" follows, before the second side starts with the samba composition "Agua de Beber", which exceptionally features a Fender Rhodes piano. On the melancholy "Falando de amor" the band sounds as a traditional piano trio. With the soprano saxophone, the listeners are invited to "Dindi": this calm bossa immediately caused a smile among the players already during the preparatory rehearsals. "Luiza" is again a ¾ bossa, which combines with the earthy echoes of Scandinavian jazz.
"Fotografia Música de Jobim" was recorded by the top-class musicians Simon Becker-Foss (sax, perc, arr), Helge Adam (p, ep, arr), Peter Schwebs (kb), Dieter "Zipper" Schmigelok (dr). The latter already played "The Girl From Ipanema" as a New York student with Astrud Gilberto. But convince yourself with this album that Jobim has much more to offer than this undoubtedly wonderful evergreen.
